Older gap-year volunteers `consider carbon footprint`
It has been suggested older people choosing to go on gap year-style volunteering breaks tend to consider the green implications of their trips #150; which could include their carbon footprint.According to gapyear.com, elderly travellers are `a lot more discerning` when it comes to deciding where to offer their services.Founder of the advisory site Tom Griffiths said the economies of their destinations are a factor in their choice, suggesting they tend to avoid nations where the money ends up in the accounts of international firms. `Being able to stay in an eco lodge or somewhere where there is zero harm for the planet is a good thing,` he added.Mr Griffiths` comments follow the recent publication of data by responsibletravel.com, which stated there has been an eight per cent increase in enquiries about eco vacations.Marine conservation projects are a particular area of interest for these types of travellers, the figures revealed.A study released by Year Out Group, meanwhile, suggested teaching, health care and farming are among the most popular activities.
