Car rental firms see offset success
A carbon offsetting scheme launched by a vehicle rental group has seen more than 175,000 customers participate voluntarily in the year since it has been set up. Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental, all owned by the Taylor family of St Louis, offers motorists the option to pay $1.25 (GBP0.84) per rental to participate. This amount is the average cost of offsetting the carbon emissions of a week`s vehicle use and the companies have raised over $220,000 for green projects using the scheme. Furthermore, the group`s charitable arm has matched customer donations bringing the total to $440,000. So far, more than 42,000 metric tonnes of carbon have been offset - the equivalent to 98,000 barrels of oil, according to Environmental Protection Agency standards.`That is exactly the kind of impact we envisioned when we started this program a year ago,` explained director of corporate sustainability for the three brands Lee Broughton. In other news, Australia`s climate change and water minister senator Penny Wong today (April 6th) announced a competition to encourage school children to think about the environment.
