Global warming `may reduce ocean CO2`
Global warming could be triggering a natural CO2 removal process in the earth`s atmosphere, new research has suggested.According to the Guardian, a scientist from the University of Leeds believes that as ice sheets break up and drift northwards, minerals are deposited into the ocean. This in turn helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The theory, proposed by professor Rob Raiswell in a study published in the journal Geochemical Transactions, could prove controversial, as it suggests that global warming may help to reduce CO2 levels in the environment.Raiswell already believes around 120,000 tonnes of `bioavailable` iron is deposited in the Southern Ocean on a yearly basis. This has helped the growth of photosynthetic plankton, which absorbs CO2.A report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year claimed that melting glaciers and ice caps contributed to rises in sea level between 1993 and 2003.The other major contributor to increased sea volumes was said to be changing climates across the globe.
