Technology needed to beat carbon emissions
Technological intervention is needed to cut carbon emissions, scientists have said.A poll carried out by the Independent has shown a growing consensus among climate change experts that the latest technology should be deployed.Respondents said that recent efforts to encourage carbon emissions reduction have so far proved less successful than expected. For significant carbon reduction to be made, geoengineering practices should be introduced.Professor James Lovelock, author of the Gaia hypothesis, told the newspaper he doubted the Kyoto agreement would succeed.`I am neither more nor less optimistic now about prospect of curbing CO2 compared to ten years ago. `I am, however, less optimistic now about the ability of the Earth`s climate system to cope with expected increases in atmospheric carbon levels compared with ten years ago.`Geoengineering projects up for consideration include fertilising sea beds with iron filings to encourage the growth of carbon-absorbing underwater plant phytoplankton.
