Government`s climate change obligations questioned
The government is struggling to meet its aims under the Climate Change Act, according to a commentator. Its plan to cut carbon emissions through renewable energy is lagging behind its targets, the Guardian noted. Airports and roads are also being expanded, while the motor industry was given incentives under the scrappage scheme to carry on producing polluting vehicles, George Monbiot wrote on his blog.`I cannot understand how these policies can be reconciled with a legally binding 80 per cent cut by 2050, let alone a 34 per cent cut by 2020,` he remarked.Mr Monbiot also criticised the decision to abandon plans for more green homes in Britain, which he claims have been scuppered by a new consultation document of the building regulations. His comments follow a recent speech by prime minster Gordon Brown where he promised to tackle climate change. The Roadmap to Copenhagen announcement came ahead of a summit of world leaders in the Danish city in December.
